Go To The Ant – How to be Successful

How to be Successful

Go To The Ant

Proverbs 6:6-10 (KJB) Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest. How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:

Solomon is warning his son that if you want to be a success and do something for God, you have to learn how to get out of bed.  If you want to do something for in your life, you will have to learn to do something other than sleep.  You have to learn to have a good solid work ethic.  Using ants as an example, Solomon is pointing to the work ethic of ants and how they work without instructions.  Ants have no king, ruler, boss or overseer, but they work very hard.  There needs to be a work ethic inside us so that if nobody is looking over our shoulders we still get done what we are supposed to do.  Hard work is a product of character and should not be the product of someone looking over your shoulder.  One of the first characteristics we should look for when choosing a lifelong spouse is to find out when they make it a habit of getting out of bed.  The time that someone gets out of bed is a big indicator of your character.  If you’re going to make a lifelong commitment to someone, I think it would be wise to find out if their lazy and can’t get out of bed.

Here are a couple of characteristics of a lazy person:

  1. Lazy people have problems to just get out of bed – Proverbs 6:9 (KJV) “How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?” The problem is not that you are the type of person that needs 8-10 hours of sleep.  Fools sleep away their lives like a dog. They party late and rise late. Some of this generation would rather stay up all night playing games and entertain themselves.  As long as they have means for today, why worry about tomorrow? Yet, such an absurd belief leads to inevitable poverty.   Contrary the Bible tells us the following:   Colossians 3:23 (KJB) “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.”  It’s impossible to work hard when you stay in bed all the time.  Solomon also said the following:   Proverbs 13:4 (KJB) “The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.”
  2. They are unfaithful.  Lazy people cannot be dependable – Proverbs 10:26 (KJV) “As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to them that send him.” When you send a lazy person out to do a job it is like having smoke blown in your eyes, it is just irritating.  The reason it is an irritation is that the job won’t get done, they will get lost or disappear, and you can’t depend on the lazy person.    Proverbs 25:19 (KJB) “Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble is like a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint.”
  3. They want things given to them.  We live in a generation of people who feel entitled – Proverbs 13:4 (KJV) “The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.” The reason the lazy person has nothing is that they spend all their time wishing they had everyone else’s stuff.  They will complain because nobody will give them anything.  The person who has a good work ethic will not care of others have, they are willing to work to provide the items they need.  Paul spoke about this subject:   2 Thessalonians 3:10-11 (KJB) “For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies.”
  4. They are always looking for excuses – Proverbs 20:4 (KJV) “The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have” The lazy person is always looking for a reason why something can’t be done.  Lazy people will spend an hour arguing why they can’t do a job that takes fifteen minutes.  Lazy people will work harder to get out of work than the effort it would take just to do the work.  Benjamin Franklin had this to say about making excuses – “He that is good for making excuses is seldom good for anything else.”   Proverbs 19:5 (KJB) “A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall not escape.”
  5. They are an expert at getting out of work – Proverbs 26:16 (KJV) “The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can render a reason.” If you try to teach a lazy person how to do something they will suddenly become stupid.  They will act like they don’t understand, they will ask you to explain simple processes multiple times, they will act like they are simple but when it comes to finding shortcuts they are suddenly as intelligent as Albert Einstein.   Proverbs 16:2-3 (KJB) “All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits. Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.”
