God Always Knows How to Get Man’s Undivided Attention
And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died. Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD, and against thee; pray unto the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people. And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live. And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived. (Numbers 21:6-9 KJV)
God sent many venomous snakes to crawl about loose into the Israelite’s camp. These snakes spared no mercy, biting many and causing a number of people to succumb to their physical death. The situation with the snakes did not get better but continued to escalate, killing many and serving to get the undivided attention of the remaining Israelite’s still alive in the camp.
These scripture verses are about how God used snakes to revenge His wrath because of grievous sin, but they are also a beautiful picture of the saving grace of Jesus Christ made possible upon the cross at Calvary. The people who were still alive in the camp humbly came before Moses, their mediator, who approached God about this great sin problem. God sent these snakes because there was rampant sin flourishing in the camp rather than heart felt obedience to His will in the lives of many Israelite’s.
Moses was directed by God to make a brass serpent on a pole which was lifted up for any Israelite to look at and live after they had been bitten by a poisonous snake. This was a picture of the death sting from the sin nature of satan, which is still rampant on this earth today. This brass pole is a picture of the raising up of Jesus Christ on the cross at Calvary, who died and rose again for all sin of the world, so mankind can live forever with God in the eternal realm.
God might not send a multitude of snakes into a sinner’s life today but He will find a way to get their immediate attention on their sin nature and the supernatural saving power of the cross at Calvary.
