God Loved The Nation of Judah
Jeremiah 18:7-10 (KJV) At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, and to pull down, and to destroy it; If that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them. And at what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it; If it do evil in my sight, that it obey not my voice, then I will repent of the good, wherewith I said I would benefit them.
God loved the nation of Judah so much that He desired for the people to turn their attention to Him rather than serving idolatry and, most of all, for them to repent of their sin. God wanted these people to change their spiritual heart tone so much that He promised to repent (or change His mind) about bringing them the consequences of their sin. God’s change of heart does not mean He is wrong about leveling on them the dire effects relating to their sin. Instead, it shows God’s great love for the Jewish nation, despite their willingness to sin.
However, collectively, these ancient Jewish people’s hearts are stoically set against serving and savoring God. Hardened hearts cannot hear nor understand God’s message, and that is the case here as well. God offered them an olive branch, but these people are stubborn and set in their evil ways to recognize their sin or apply God’s message to their hearts.
Just like today, the nation of Judah lives in a blame-shifting society. Rather than admit responsibility for their foolish state of affairs, they remain pleased to stand in opposition to God. These people want to shift the blame to their circumstances and unloving god who has it in for them.
