God’s Plan Accomplished

John 19:28 (KJB) After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.

Jesus Christ came to this earth for one reason and one reason only, to fulfill the will of His Father.  It was only when this purpose was about to be fulfilled that Jesus Christ spoke in His now wavering humanity, requesting a drink.

Imagine, if you will, Jesus Christ hanging on the cross as the blood drained from His hands and His feet. Medical shock was about to set in from this loss of blood.  His heart began to race, and His blood pressure began to fall.  Yes, physical death was waiting right around the corner, but first, humanly, He desired a drink.

Perhaps this thirst was spiritual craving for water beyond a physical need for water.  Have you ever thought about it in that way?  As Jesus Christ approached physical death, at this moment, He was about to separate from His Father in death and go into the grave.  Just like when a person separates from God, he or she innately crave fellowship with God.  So did Jesus Christ in human flesh as He was about to succumb to death.  He was Jesus Christ Son of God and at the same time was mankind in the flesh.  Try to wrap that statement around your mind.

This seemingly unpretentious request for water is crucial; it shows us that Jesus Christ was both human and God.  However, to the Roman soldiers this last-ditch appeal was nothing more than another opportunity to make fun of Him and to enjoy His humanly miserable circumstance one more time.  So fun that instead of offering Him water, these soldiers gave Him a sponge soaked in vinegar.

Jesus Christ had human needs, feelings, and desires when He was present on this earth for the purpose of accomplishing God’s will.  At the same time He was equal with God.  This supernatural threefold union; consisting of The Father, The Son, and The Spirit; is incomprehensible this side of heaven,  One day this will make perfect sense to every sincere child of God.
