Going the Extra Mile
John 11:6-8 (KJB) When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was. 7 Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again. 8 His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?
Did it seem strange to you that Jesus Christ was willing to return to Judea? His disciples could not understand why He would knowingly go back to an area where men were recently hostile towards Him. They had desired to stone Him to death. If it were up to them, the apostles would have refrained from visiting there so soon again.
But, Jesus Christ had an important reason for being drawn back to Bethany. His friend Lazarus lay dead a few days. It was the will of His Father that His power be used in bringing Lazarus back to life. Even after four days of death His supernatural power used in calling his name immediately caused Lazarus to arise to new life!
How many of us would be resolved to face possible death and certain danger to come to the spiritual aid of a friend? For most of us, we would be dismissive, choose to ignore the call, or fail to go to such a great length, even for a dear friend.
Jesus gives us a great example of genuine love and the importance of reaching out to a friend. Lazarus was indeed in a time of great need and Jesus was willing to go the extra spiritual mile. In fact, only the supernatural power of Jesus Christ could resurrect Lazarus from death unto life.
Are we willing to jump in and help our friends, acquaintances, and our brothers and sisters in Christ when they face great times of desperation and spiritual need? Jesus Christ set many great examples for us to follow and apply in our own lives as we sojourn in this world.
