Honor Sons Above God, Not
1 Samuel 2:27-29 (KJB) And there came a man of God unto Eli, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Did I plainly appear unto the house of thy father, when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh’s house? 28 And did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to offer upon mine altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me? and did I give unto the house of thy father all the offerings made by fire of the children of Israel? 29 Wherefore kick ye at my sacrifice and at mine offering, which I have commanded in my habitation; and honourest thy sons above me, to make yourselves fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of Israel my people?
There is a lot of wickedness at work in many homes today. Nothing has changed since ancient biblical times. These verses speak of a man of God (maybe he is a priest or prophet the Bible is not specific) who approached Eli concerning his house.
Now I am sure you know that Eli was a chosen man of God. However, maybe you are not aware of the circumstances at work in the lives of his family and home. You see, Eli placed greater importance on the events and experiences at work in the lives of his sons rather than placing due emphasis on God. Eli was aware of the corruption and wickedness taking place about him, but failed to handle it.
Perhaps this same kind of scenario is the case in many homes, even today. The parents understand that their family life is in an uproar, and wickedness and sin are left to rot while at the same time, often, the things of God are placed on the back burner of family life. You see, a home either has the presence and power of God at work or the god of this world to rules and reigns.
The presence of wickedness is real, whether it be at work inside a home, a church, or at work in life. Choosing to place truths and direction of God behind that of family and friends sets any person or group up for a sudden fall. Here in these verses, Eli fails to offer spiritual insulation and necessary instruction to protect souls from certain destruction. Rather than to show his boys the way of God, Eli allowed them to spiritually falter and fail miserably, not only in this world but potentially forever.
Please do not be like Eli; he was a “yes” man with a disregard for things of God. Introduce your family and friends to the power and presence of God, making sure they are aware of His power and potential both in this world and forever in eternity. Sincere love for God and others will bring a desire to step in and introduce lost and wayward souls to the saving power of God.
