How Can We Sing In A Strange Land?
Psalm 137:2-4 (KJV) We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof. For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion. How shall we sing the LORD’S song in a strange land?
This Psalm was written during the Babylonian captivity by an unknown author inspired by God. Its writer asks a penetrating question – how can we sing in a strange land? A land that is unfamiliar territory, a strange land, indeed.
These people held captive in an alien land could not muster up the song of joy hidden in their hearts. In other words, God’s peaceful music was there, but these hurting souls allowed their circumstances to dictate their not playing of God’s melody buried in their hearts. These people chose to hang up their instruments, music was natural to them, to not sing concerning God’s presence and joy, who had not left them seemingly high, dry, and desperate.
The truth is that each professing Christain can and should find many reasons for joy and jubilation lifted towards God in any circumstance of life. Even amid persecution and captivity in this wicked world, we will sing praises forever at the throne of God for one day soon. The joy and heart music of God rests forever inside every regenerate soul.
Think about this: how often do you and I allow adverse or unpleasant circumstances on this earth to dampen our joy and to silence our praises to God? Perhaps we each need to take a moment to thank God and sing praise to Him from the depths of our hearts, even as we often find ourselves smack-dab in the middle of trying and troubling times as we sojourn in this corrupt world.
