Innate Knowledge Given
John 1:9 (KJB) That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
This verse in the first chapter of the book of John can easily confuse growing Christians. That is until one chooses to compare scripture with scripture to reveal God’s intent, context, and meaning. A wrong understanding is that each person born into this world is automatically handed the light (salvation) of God upon birth.
However, this verse details the fact that God innately makes His presence known and available to all humanity through His generous gift of life, but this gift is not found naturally at work in lost hearts. This eternal gift of God must personally be applied to the lost state of every natural heart condition. The true Light, spoken of here in this verse, is not a “one size fits all” blanket automatically applied to the spirit upon birth into this world but remains an individual choice.
I once heard a preacher say that this verse provides comfort in the untimely death of young children because this specific scripture tells us that each of us is born with the light of God. No, this verse tells us that each person is enlightened upon birth concerning the presence of God, for this knowledge was handpainted by God on the landscape of this world (Romans 1). Each does innately know God exists, but each must decide to apply this truth to their heart.
The age of accountability, which goes hand in hand with the untimely death of a child, is about reaching the age of comprehension regarding this truth, and this is apart from the light of God. I hope you also understand for those who never reach this point (a newborn infant or a person without comprehension skills) who dies will be eternally alive with God.
However, the truth is that even with this widely available proof, many choose to reject any notion of the power and presence of God. Any person who discards God does not personally have His light at work in their heart. It is only upon the salvation of God in the center of their soul that a person is eternally filled with God’s Light.
