Jesus Silences the Hypocrites
John 8:7 (KJV) So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
These verses come from one of my favorite accounts God inspired for John to record in His Word. The context of this verse is that a group of people came to Jesus to report dodgy behavior concerning a promiscuous woman. Regrettably, this woman was caught in the act with a man who was not her husband. Perhaps today, many people would not give a second thought to such behavior and give this woman a pass, with lude behavior more common in this corrupt world.
However, in ancient times, this kind of conduct was lurid indeed. However, Jesus was concerned with the hypocritical behavior at work among these finger-pointing men. The truth is that these men involved themselves in the sin of this woman, but at the same time laying aside their wickedness. Jesus saw right through their tattling and pointed right back to them concerning the sin at work in their own life.
In essence, Jesus pointed out that none of these men had any reason to be concerned with this woman’s sin, especially when they were sinners as well. Maybe their sin was a different “flavor,” but not one of these men could consider themselves above her actions, for, after all, sin is sin, and it does not come in different levels or costs. Thus, when God looked at this situation, all He sees is sin at work among all these souls, compassion for the woman, and His response silenced the hypocritical men.
Jesus straightway silenced the phony nature of the complaints given by these men. Rather than humiliate this woman by taking their criticisms against her severely, Jesus offered her grace. Then He turned the tables, making these men recognize their own sinful nature. This tactic quieted the concern about the lewd actions of this woman and placed their emphasis on their own sin.
