Jonah Paid The Fare
Jonah 1:3 (KJB) But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.
Jonah paid the fare to flee away from the presence of God. This hasty decision did not work well for him. Though perhaps at first, he thought he got a whale of a deal, eventually, he ended up with seaweed on his head and even wallowing around in the belly of a great fish. These circumstances came into his life for failing to follow the directive God placed on his life.
In other words, Jonah told God No rather than submitting to the will of God for his life. God spared Jonah’s life even though he chose to follow his desires leading away from God rather than align himself with God. Through all this, God did not give up on Jonah.
Jonah went his own way at his own cost even though God provided free fare to Ninevah. God provided direction to Jonah. However, His journey came to an abrupt end as Jonah was tossed in the waves and cast overboard and ended up inside the belly of a whale. God patiently waited for Jonah to submit to His will eventually.
