Joseph, Fear Not
Matthew 1:18-20 (KJV) Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.
The angel delivered a message to Joseph, perhaps amid questions swirling about in his head. This supernatural messenger conveyed the importance of being a fair man who loved God, respected Mary, and protected her privacy. In other words, Joseph was not to lose heart in his current state of affairs, nor that of Mary, pregnant before they knew each other. It was not common in ancient times for a woman to be with a child before marriage. Not only that, but it was not an ordinary event for a simple man like Joseph to meet with God in his dreams through a visit with an angel.
All that said, the Bible does record that Mary is indeed pregnant by the Holy Spirit before marrying Joseph, and he is not to fret and worry about these extraordinary circumstances but to keep on keeping on with Mary their wedding and her pregnancy. In doing this, Joseph is not to be concerned about any of these situations but instead to trust God for the outcome.
Joseph is told by this angel coming to speak to him that he was not fear marrying Mary, for this child is conceived of the Holy Spirit as her pregnancy does not stem from any extramarital relations with another man. This message must have been a lot to digest. However, Joseph did just as this angel communicated to him and wed Mary and accepted this child conceived by the Holy Spirit without wavering or unnecessary questions for God is involved. It is remarkable, but God’s Word does not record any time that Joseph was apprehensive about his circumstances.
