Just shut up!
James 1:26 (KJV) If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.
I am confident that many of you, and for sure, also includes me, need to hear this message repeatedly! Oh, how often our mouth and our choice of words gets us in trouble. Our mouth opens, and wrong words stumble out before our mind and heart can stop us!
In numerous places, in the book of James, we are warned about the wicked potential, and often harmful impact of our words have towards others. Please let us not take his message about this lightly. If you are like me, every time you open your mouth, you can quickly often end up in some sort of trouble without precaution.
Sometimes each of us simply need to shut up! What, you claim that may seem extreme!
Yes, I know it is hard not to speak up every time we desire to spill out our opinion on prominent spiritual matters. After all, we have that right and even duty of free speech, you know. Indeed it is often easy to find an audience to hear what we have to say as well in this much-opinionated rebel leaning world. However, we must consider that what remains essential and eternally vital is always what God has to say. His opinion is really all that matters. Our thoughts, feelings, ideas, beliefs, and ultimately our selection of words are nothing when compared to what God has to say!
Though it often seems appealing to say what you want, when you want, and how you want, the reality is that a sincere child of God often chooses to bridle his or her tongue rather than speaking up in every matter of life. Silence can indeed be golden! Especially when such stillness allows God’s Words heard!
