Earthy authorities can be oppressive but God is always in ultimately in control as government rests upon His shoulders.

And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar’s, and unto God the things which be God’s. (Luke 20:25 KJV)

Taxes, nobody ever desires to be taxed.  In America we pay taxes upon taxes and yet more taxes to our government.  Taxation is a heavy burden for many working class citizen taxpayers while others who are not working seem to reap the benefits of these hard earned tax dollars.  Taxes were a huge burden for citizens in biblical times too.

The context of these Bible verses is in the time Jesus was physically alive upon this earth The Roman government collected oppressive taxes from their citizens often in an unworthy or unfair manner.  Jesus was asked by a group of Pharisees who were trying to “cozy” up to Him in a false pretense trying to stir up contention and strife trapping Jesus with His answer regarding paying taxes to the Roman government.

They inquired of Him:

Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or no? (Luke 20:22 KJV)

These pious Jewish lawyers (who clearly understood the law) were looking to trap Jesus in treason or a legal charge of being disloyal to the Roman government.  They were hoping He would answer in a way either that was inhospitable or hostile toward the government decree of taxation on its citizens or in favor of government opposing its citizens which would deflate His popularity with them.

Jesus understood the trap and their clever way of pitting Him against the citizens or in a bad way with the laws of the Roman Government.  Jesus answered in a way that was righteous unto God and submissive to the government as well.

Jesus answered their pointed question:

Shew me a penny. Whose image and superscription hath it? They answered and said, Caesar’s. And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar’s, and unto God the things which be God’s. (Luke 20:24-25 KJV)

The Pharisees were amazed with His answer and could not use it against Him in any way.

Citizens of the family of God living as citizens of government upon this earth have a duty to be loyal to God’s standard as they comply in submission to earthly authorities.
