Lacking Faith

Matthew 17:19-20 (KJV) Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out? And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

Faith is something a person either has a little or has a great abundance or on the other hand, some possess no faith at all.  Here in these verses, a few concerned disciples were asking Jesus about their inability to rid a person of evil spirits.  These men were perplexed about being unable to take care of this serious issue; for undoubtedly they had witnessed Jesus do it often and knew the removal of dark spirits was a part of their spiritual potential.

Soon enough, these curious apostles found out from Jesus that taking care of evil spirits relies on placing faith in God.  This kind of endeavor does not require putting faith in oneself, hope in the work of another man.  No, instead, faith in God is the only way that evil spirits can successfully be depleted from a soul.

In other words, it is all about the work of God, not humanity.

That is what their spiritual ineffectiveness boiled down to, a lack of faith.  Though they desired to remove evil spirits, they had not placed faith in the work of God in this matter.  Casting out demons is accomplished by putting trust in the power and presence of God and allowing Him to use them as vessels to accomplish His will and way in the hearts of others.
