Love for Brethren
1 John 3:14 (KJB) We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.
Oh, so many people have vital biblical-based teaching about love for their brethren all figured out, or so they think. Many will claim that all a person has to do is only love others despite anything and everything at work in their life. However, many often fail to align their actions to meet the entire context of this verse of scripture to include brothers and sisters in Christ.
The truth is that this verse contains a message for each of us concerning our brothers and sisters in Christ, who we serve alongside in ministries and churches. This lesson includes teaching about both love and hate. In other words, in proper context, it is not all about love but includes vital direction for us concerning hostility at work in the heart.
A person can profess to love a brother or sister in Christ, but at the same time, secretly harbor hate for another inside his heart. Hatred towards any person is undoubtedly an unbiblical position. Hating another is not the right place to find oneself standing. Clutching onto hate allows a lost or wayward hearted person to adopt and to apply the wrong message concerning sincere love, including in our relationships with our brethren in Christ.
God inspired a plain message concerning love, hate, fellowship with brethren, and concerning death in this verse to be understood and applied equally in our relationships with other believers. Many people take the world’s teaching about loving others to heart and push to the sidelines this biblical view of love and hate given of God. Indeed, in the end, many skew God’s vital message concerning biblical love for our brethren, with some placing the state of their eternal future in jeopardy.
Love for people and things of this world is far different than esteeming and instilling a biblical love for the brethren, which are God’s spiritual family standing in Christ. This vital message from God ties together our love for God and our brothers and sisters in Christ and commences with genuine fellowship with God for eternity.
