Man Is to Conduct a Heart Inspection Before Taking Communion
For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. (1 Corinthians 11:29-30 KJV)
The truth contained in these two scripture verses should certainly cause new Christians along with spiritual veterans who appear to be seasoned and mature Christians, to pause and contemplate.
“For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily…” is not speaking of feasting on a meal of rich food and alcohol. It is a reference to drinking of the blood and eating of the bread both respectively representing the blood and broken body of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice on the cross for the sin of all mankind.
Before taking of the bread and juice, an illustration of the death of Christ on the cross, man must take heed to check the spiritual condition of his own heart. Unconfessed sin allowed to remain in the heart is a dangerous spiritual condition for man to enter into when partaking of communion. Communion is outward expression of a right relationship and personal fellowship with God. It would be taking His sacrifice in vain or with little esteem for the holiness and righteousness of God.
