Many And Never
Matthew 7:22-23 (KJV) Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
I hope you know by now that in reading and studying scripture, context is everything. Many verses have applications for ancient times, and today, first, we must understand the context God intends both for ancient souls and application for hearts and minds this day. Sometimes God uses parables, and other times He uses accounts of ancient history, and other times He issues decrees to teach us about Himself and to help us serve Him.
Let’s look at these two words: “many” and “never” in these verses. The usage of the word “many” encapsulates several people collectively while “never” slams the door for lost humanity for any further opportunity to know and serve God. This scripture’s message points to the state of souls appearing spiritually regenerated on this earth. Still, only God understood their real state of heart as physical death ensues, and God directs them to their final eternal address.
As is taught throughout scripture, it is not about your state of “doing,” but about your state of “being” that makes all the difference in the eternal realm. Many souls are busy acting the part of a child of God. Or in other words, on the outside, it appears they are savoring and serving God. However, acting this part alone is not a litmus test of the state of heart towards God. Just as this scripture points out, no soul can fool God as to their real spiritual condition.
One final important phrase found in this scripture verse is “I never knew you: depart from me…” The truth is that acting the part of being a disciple of God can only get you so far in this world, but it does not get you anywhere with God. The truth is that God is waiting in eternity to welcome His spiritual family into perpetual fellowship. At the same time, God sits on His throne with another eternal address for every soul who failed to place faith in Him as they lived in this wicked world.
There are only two pathways for a soul once he or she reaches eternity. God places His spiritual family in sweet fellowship forever, but the “many” who chose to stand in eternal opposition to Him identify themselves outside of fellowship with God permanently, for He “never” knew them.
