Marks of A Cult

Guest Post by Word Ministries

Discernment – Knowing what is right from what is almost right, not just right from wrong.

How to see a counterfeit – know the real thing so well that the differences stand out easily when contrasted against each other.

Jude 3 (KJB) Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.

1 Peter 3:15 (KJB) But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

Acts 17:11 (KJB) These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

2 Timothy 2:15 (KJB) Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Addition – Additions to the Word of God (Bible) as the final authority
Subtraction – Subtraction from The Trinity
Multiplication – Multiplication of the requirements for salvation.
Division – Division of the individual from God.

Additions to the Word of God can come in many ways: other books, people, institutions, etc.
Subtraction from the Trinity is usually a denial of the Deity of Jesus as God and the denial of the Holy Spirit as a person of the Trinity.
Multiplication of the requirements for salvation is works. Faith + Works = Salvation.
The division of the individual from God is telling the individual that salvation is only through their group not just Jesus.

Biblical Answers to the Above Marks.

Answers to Addition – We are not to add to or take from scripture. Cults do this by a variety of means, adding books or outside writings, teaching that only their organization has the correct interpretation of scripture and you must listen to their teachers, “prophets” or “apostles” or traditions in spite of the scriptural denial of what they teach.

2 Peter 1:20 (KJB) Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.

2 Timothy 3:16 (KJB) All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

Deuteronomy 4:2 (KJB) Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.

Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJB) Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Revelation 22:18-21 (KJB) For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

1 John 2:26-27 (KJB) These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you. But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

Answers to Subtraction – Cults take away from the Trinity, usually by denying the deity of Jesus Christ and/or the Holy Spirit.

And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.

Matthew 28:19 (KJB) Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

1 John 5:7 (KJB) For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

John 1:1 (KJB) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:14 (KJB) And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

1 Timothy 3:16 (KJB) And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

Acts 5:3-4 (KJB) But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.

Isaiah 40:3 (KJB) The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

Mark 1:3 (KJB) The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

Revelation 1:8 (KJB) I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.

Revelation 21:6 (KJB) And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.

Revelation 22:13 (KJB) I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.

Revelation 1:17 (KJB) And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last:

Hebrews 7:3 (KJB) Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually.

Titus 2:13 (KJB) Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

Answers to Multiplication – Salvation is simple and not through any church or organization. The Church or organization doesn’t provide salvation only Jesus does.

Ephesians 2:8-9 (KJB) For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Titus 3:5 (KJB) Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

2 Timothy 1:9 (KJB) Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,

Romans 11:6 (KJB) And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.

Answers to Division – cults put themselves as the only way to salvation in the place of Jesus Christ. They do so subtly. They say you have to stay part of them to be saved and remain saved. They are wrong. They say that they are the ‘true’ church and that all others are false churches. They often shun former members even dividing them from their families that are still members.

1 Timothy 2:5 (KJB) For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

Hebrews 8:6 (KJB) But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.

Hebrews 9:15 (KJB) And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

Hebrews 12:24 (KJB) And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.

Acts 4:10-12 (KJB) Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

Marks of A Cult

Psalm 37:39 (KJB) But the salvation of the righteous is of the LORD: he is their strength in the time of trouble.

Psalm 62:7 (KJB) In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.

Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

1 Corinthians 15:1-4 (KJB)

Acts 4:10-12 (KJB) Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

An organization can have one of these marks and be cultish, if all are present it is
definitely a cult.

Two types of people in cults – The deceivers and the deceived.
Satan is the cause for cults but man helps him. Jesus is the answer.

The deceived and deceivers can be saved, give them the gospel. Pray for their salvation
