Mindset, Motive, and Ministry

John 12:4-6 (KJB) Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, which should betray him, 5 Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? 6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.

Judas Iscariot, the one who would soon betray Jesus Christ, was concerned in these verses about this costly perfume wasted rather than sold, with proceeds go to those in financial need.  On the surface, this sounds good, seems reasonable, and perhaps was right in some cases.

However, one must consider the heart condition of the messenger here.  Judas was of the wrong mindset and improper motive.  He did not personally care about meeting the needs of others, including that of Jesus.  Or to share in the financial concerns of the needy.  No, as this verse points out, Judas was a thief who collected tax money, without abandon, daily.  Judas Was consumed with money and harbored disregard for the needs of others in raising ridiculous taxes on the rich and poor alike with his own hand in this till no less.

Indeed, you understand that Judas did not know Jesus Christ on a personal level nor care about any personal or financial aspect concerning Him.  Though outwardly Judas’s daily activities and speech seemed to follow along with and agree to Jesus’s ministry, Judas was a spiritual wolf in disguise standing in bold opposition to the teachings and ministry of Jesus.

The message God saw fit to have recorded in this verse is one of a professing Christian harboring wrong motives and in having a wrong mindset.  Though on the outside of such action, we cannot fully realize the inward workings of the heart, God always knows what is at the bottom of our every move and thought.
