Mob Rule Existed in Biblical Times

Acts 19:29-32 (KJB) And the whole city was filled with confusion: and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul’s companions in travel, they rushed with one accord into the theatre. 30 And when Paul would have entered in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not. 31 And certain of the chief of Asia, which were his friends, sent unto him, desiring him that he would not adventure himself into the theatre. 32 Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was confused; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together.

Mob Rule, as depicted in these above scripture verses, is carried out by a rough band of like-minded heathens who care nothing for diplomacy or in seeking their brand of peace.  This rough and rogue group chose to rush in causing melee and great confusion.  These men used mayhem to get their agenda or point across to others in a mad rush rather than employing kindness, diplomacy, tact, and godly reason.

Though the Bible does not tell us if there were any injuries, this kind of harried and heated situation can often include the destruction of property and perhaps physical injuries to any person standing in the way of such a boisterous and sin maddening agenda.

Not only did mob rule happen like this in biblical times but it can and does happen today.  It is nothing new for like-minded groups of people to rush to quick judgment fueled by their own opinions and resolve.  Sadly, people choose to resort to such chaos and disorder to push their agenda by inflicting outrageous and unreasonable demands on the lives of others.  This can only work to complicate and destroy lives rather than bringing any sort of relief or for solving any real problems.

Gaius and Aristarchus are friends of Paul.  These men were hurriedly forced into a theater by the movement of an angry mob of men.  When Paul heard of the disturbance that ensued he desired to go and be with his friends who found themselves in such great trouble.  Paul was discouraged from going to their aid by other important people standing by working influence him to act otherwise for his own safety.

Sometimes God calls us to act in certain situations like this and at other times He directs us to step aside and not get involved.  Paul heeded the advice of others in this out of control circumstance.

Mob rule mentality has been around since ancient biblical times.  Sometimes people choose to push an agenda by resorting to force unwilling agreement and compliance.  While a child of God is often led to trust the will and grace of God to affect hearts in a more mature and spiritually mellow fashion according to His will and way.
