Philippians 1:22-24 (KJB) But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not. 23 For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better: 24 Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you.
The Apostle Paul was inspired to parse what can seem to be contradictory thoughts. Once a person digs into the meat of these verses it all makes sense. Paul is saying, on one hand, he is ready to depart from this world in physical death to be with Christ, but on the other hand he understands that he will remain alive in this world for a while for his time to physically die has not yet come.
Certainly, if he could make this choice on his own, the Apostle Paul would desire to be physically dead and found in spirit in eternal sweet fellowship with God. However, since God controls both life and death and it is not yet his time to die, Paul is more than willing to remain in this world in his flesh ministering to lost souls.
I hope you too have a desire like the Apostle Paul to depart this earth and reside with God forever in eternity. However, while you are present on this earth, God has a will for your life just as He did for Paul. Undoubtedly, when God sees fit, He will call you home, but for now it is more needful for you, just like it was for the Apostle Paul to remain alive ministering on this earth.
A sincere child of God is willing to fulfill whatever role God has for his life both on this earth and in eternity. At this time it is more needful for you and me to remain alive and kicking on this earth, but we know at a time of God’s choosing, He will call us to our heavenly eternal home.
