New Age Basics Read Dt. 18:9-17
We will cover these things more, in other lessons, from other angles, so that it sticks in your mind, and so you see how insidious this thing is. I want you to see how widespread and how intricately woven together it is, And a growing part of our very culture!! Upcoming lessons will expand individual areas as we can. It will seem like we are repeating, and we will, but again, this is something that is finely put together by more than a human and it will take some doing to unravel it! It is something that at first glance, you might feel like dismissing as just a fad, or trend, or inconsequential group of people! It is FAR more than that! Let’s begin.
The new age is hard to define… yet easy. Unorganized… yet organized. An enigma, in a mystery, wrapped in a lie. A basic definition could be as follows: It is a widespread way of thinking that appears in many forms, beliefs, and practices such as Astrology, Aura, Black and White Magic, Chakras, Chi Energy, Crystals, Druidism, Eastern Mysticism, Extraterrestrials and UFOs, Firewalking, Gaia, Gnosticism, Hare Krishna, Hinduism, Human Potential Movement, Mind Science, Native American Spirituality, Near-death Experiences, Nirvana, Parapsychology, Psychic, Reincarnation, Shamanism, Spiritism, Tai Chi, Taoism, Tarot Cards, Theosophy, Trance-Channeling, Transcendental . Meditation, Transpersonal Psychology, Witchcraft, Yin-Yang, Yoga, and Zen. Add in many occult practices, other forms of Pantheism, and inclusive-ism (for all religions EXCEPT Christianity) and you have a potent, subtle, slick, religious/political movement that draws in the unsuspecting to that which seems hip, cool, and trendy. In a word, it is… seductive!
The New Age Movement uses special terminology for their beliefs. Words like holistic and synergistic thinking, networking, global unity and harmony, cosmic energy, awakening, consciousness, and human potential, dominate their conversations and writings. But what they don’t tell anyone is how deeply religious it is. It is… of the devil himself! I hope you will see it very clearly!
Other claims are basically reincarnation. They use a term, “The Wheel of Life.” They use terms like “karma” and the “Universal spirit,” “The One,” and “The Divine Self,” in which they teach that there is no external God above all and over all, but rather we all are god(s) just waiting to become totally god, by meditation and teaching….. all at a low, low price!
The major world religions whose beliefs and practices are entwined with the New Age Movement: Hinduism (ca. 3,000 B.C.), Buddhism, (ca. 560 B.C.), and Taoism, (ca. 500 B.C.). Another prominent occultic influence is Druidism, and the Celtic religion, which extended from 300 B.C. into the middle ages. These teachings were transplanted into modern times by Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772), the Theosophical Society founded by Madame Helena Blavatsky (1831-1891), and through the First World Parliament of Religions, held in Chicago in 1893, which essentially initiated the spread of Hinduism throughout the United States. So you see it is not really new! It is an amalgamation … and Genesis 3 repackaged! But who sees it? WHY… is it in many churches???
Alice Bailey (circa 1945) was a prominent disciple of Blavatsky, and in my terms, a flat out devil worshiper! But my O my did her books and teachings ever catch on, and are still used, almost as the New Age Bible!
The 1960s (aided by those fun-loving, always sanitary… hippies) witnessed a particular infusion of Eastern mysticism and the study of secret wisdom (esoteric) from India. Zen Buddhism, Carlos Castanada, Transcendental Meditation, and Yoga became the in thing… and are even more popular today. In the eighties, Shirley MacLaine’s books and television shows gave the New Age Movement more traction. Add in the growing fascination with Eastern mystic religions with the growing popularity of rock groups such as the Beatles, Jefferson Airplane, The Rolling Stones, The Doors (Jim Morrison), Led Zeppelin, and many others who went to India to study, and you have a potent mixture that, through the music, goes right past all mental filters and into the mind where it preaches whatever it wants! (Their words… not mine)
But what of the Christian influence? According to surveys 86% of Americans claim to be Christian, yet 72% reject the notion of absolute truth, while 40% believe in a New Age (pantheistic) view of God; 30% believe in reincarnation, and 36% believe that astrology is scientific. Fake Bibles with gaping doctrinal holes and weak pulpits! But what of New Age doctrines?
New Agers absolutely reject absolute truth (a little confusing there), and therefore the Bible. Strong Christianity is out! Truth is both relative and…. what THEY say it is! (That’s funny, what happened to inclusive-ism?) Each person is and has their own reality (if you can “imagine” it, it’s real) They teach “the ONE,” wholeness, one-ness, and to BE One with the universe, nature, and the Universal spirit which is the ultimate achievement. Everyone must share all natural resources and wealth across the planet (universal socialism). The Biblical Jesus was NOT the Savior of the world, there is no heaven and no hell because there is no final authority to judge… any and all sexual preferences are OK, and enlightenment through emptying yourself to the Universal spirit (Yogic) is the way to higher consciousness, which is closer to your “god-self.” Now to close, read the following and tell me where it came from. (He studied in India under Hindu “masters” remember!)
Imagine there’s no Heaven … It’s easy if you try ;
No hell below us, Above us only sky – Imagine all the people,
Living for today.
Imagine there’s no countries, It isn’t hard to do; Nothing to kill or die for, And no religion too; Imagine all the people, Living life in peace;
You may say I’m a dreamer, But I’m not the only one;
I hope someday you’ll join us … And the world will be as One.
Imagine no possessions, I wonder if you can; No need for greed or hunger, A brotherhood of man; Imagine all the people, Sharing all the world
You may say I’m a dreamer, But I’m not the only one;
I hope someday you’ll join us, And the world will live as one!
Buckle up folks, it’s gonna be a wild ride!
