Romans 3:13-18 (KJV) Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: Their feet are swift to shed blood: Destruction and misery are in their ways: And the way of peace have they not known: There is no fear of God before their eyes.
Nothing fits the times in which we live, as do these descriptive verses from Romans’ book. They describe the familiar presence of offensive and deceitful speech compared to the stench of an open grave. Anyone who has been around a dead body, such as law enforcement or medical examiner, and technicians, can vouch for the particular odor of the stench of death. It is one that is hard to get rid of from your nostrils. Perhaps you, too, can relate after passing by a dead and bloated animal along a roadway that can take your breath away.
These verses go on to illustrate the typical characteristics of such a foul speaking person. People like this who choose to speak with utter raunchiness and to display foulness are often predisposed to the shedding of innocent blood. In other words, they care little about the precious nature of life, nor have a fear of the giver of life, God. Instead, they are willing to cut another life short, either literally or verbally, in a heated moment of hostility and hatred. Such a person is miserable and wretched and far removed from companionship with God.
The words each of us choose to speak illustrates the temperament of the state of the heart. Though God only knows the condition of every soul, both our speech and actions provide valuable evidence to our inner character and position to the nature of God.
