Not Negative And Downbeat, But Godly!
2 Corinthians 6:14 (KJV) Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
I hope you understand that God is not a “doom and gloom God.” In fact, God is far removed from that kind of characterization. Even though we are spending a bit of time looking at negative directives in the next few days, such as God inspired the writer, the Apostle Paul, this negative point provides us with a proper understanding of the implications of godly and ungodly relationships. Indeed, relationships pleasing to God are equally yoked and far from bleak and bland unions! Ungodly interactions, on the other hand, are marred and spiritually blighted from the very start.
For many folks, this verse above exclusively ties to marriage. While it is true that any person can marry him or herself into trouble by hooking up with the wrong person, it is only one aspect or application conceivable with this verse. A person can also align themselves with the wrong business partner, co-worker, or friends. Any relationship that does not include God at the head and helm is an unequal yoke.
The word yoke implies two linked together, whether in a marriage or some other alliance. The ancient illustration best explaining this partnership involves two animals bound together, pulling a cart. Certainly, you understand that such an unequal yoke would make this pulling difficult. The same problems arise in spiritually unequal relations.
