Not With Us
Luke 9:49-50 (KJB) And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us. 50 And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.
Sadly, this sounds all too familiar, “he followeth not with us…”
How often might a person hear such talk, like found in these verses above when attending a worship service? Something like “don’t worship with that church over there because … Or do not go to that church because they have a bad reputation…” Or particular sects of believers are not like us…” and perceive another’s spiritual work as a threat to back away from and not embrace.
Maybe the truth is that this person is not “with us,” but his state of heart is sincere with God.
In other words, you must check your heart condition rather than looking to judge another’s state of the heart.
It is sad but often saved people foolishly place barriers between themselves and other sincere professing believers who do not carry their identical mindfulness concerning sin, or believe as they are pressed themselves. You see, not one person will be asked to defend a choice(s) of any other person. Accounting before God is an individual responsibility and is always collectively useful in fighting wickedness and for sowing the seeds of the gospel message.
Just because an individual or another church fails to hand out tracts precisely like you believe they should. Or choose to cast out wickedness and sin in a manner that your pastor cannot agree. The truth is as long as their vision about sin, worship, and fruit production agrees with God, a child of God should support and encourage other people’s attempts to bring to fruition the work of God towards evil in this world rather than pointing a judgemental finger towards them.
Divisive nonsense such as this can portray a particular person or group of people is standing on a higher spiritual level than others of lesser spiritualness. Or that a profession of faith is known to be just cheap talk and insincere. Only God knows the heart. Jesus says here Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.
A child of God should relish the spiritual works of his or her brethren. Rather than divide brothers and sisters in Christ, we should draw together for sowing the seeds of the gospel message and in working for Christ all for the glory and honor of God. In the end, God will sort out the weeds from the chaff, for now, each must answer to God without merit.
