Nothing but Prayer and Fasting
Mark 9:28-29 (KJB) And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out? 29 And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.
“This” in these scripture verses above is a point-blank reference to the presence of dark spirits. The disciples were beside themselves because they had tried to remove a dark spirt but were not successful. They could not comprehend why they failed to rid this man of his demon, knowing demon removal was a part of their God-given ministry.
However, the very moment Jesus spoke, this demon high tailed it out of this man’s heart immediately, leaving the disciples awed and at the same time perplexed. What was the difference in their attempt and this swift kick given of God?
In answering the disciples’ question Jesus Pointed out that this demon can only be removed (by them) through prayer and fasting. It seems these men had failed to properly arm themselves with the working power and presence of God and perhaps were operating in their own strength in this daunting task of removal of an ill spirit which requires prayer and fasting rather than offering solo service.
