Once For All

Hebrews 7:26-27 (KJB) For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; 27 Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.

These verses, among many others throughout the canon of scripture, tell us that Jesus Christ is set apart from all other high priests.  Not only that, but His work on the cross at Calvary was accomplished once for all.

Let’s dig into these verses a little deeper.  How is Jesus Christ set apart from other priests?  He is holy, or untouched by sin.  The Old Testament priests had to come before God to cleanse themselves from the mar of sin daily.  Not only that, but they sacrificed animals for the sins of the people.  This necessary act did not remove sin but provided a covering for their sin.

Secondly, the Old Testament priests were of this world while Jesus Christ was out of this world, or supernatural.  God, in his entirety; Father, Son, and Spirit have been present since the beginning, even before the earth was formed.  These ancient men who God chose to become priests were born into this world.

Last, the one true priest, after the order of Melchizedek, Jesus Christ offered Himself as a she-blood sacrifice on Calvary for the removal of sin.  He not only provided a sacrifice, but His work removes sin, taking care of it forever.

These scripture verses are rich in biblical doctrine.  Each of us must study them within the context of all scripture and personally apply them to our life.  Jesus Christ is perfect, gave us a perfecting sacrifice, and if we wish to eternally fellowship with Him, we, too, must not be marred by the presence of sin.
