One Criminal Recognized Jesus
Luke 23:39-41 (KJB) And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. 40 But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss.
A malefactor is an ancient word used in pointing to a criminal. Jesus Christ was also labeled a malefactor, though He was innocent of all charge leveled against Him. These other two men He hung in the middle of were guilty of breaking the law.
One of the two men hanging on the cross on either side of Jesus railed for Him to save Himself and them too if He was really who He said He was.
Basically, “If you are the Son of God prove it to be so.”
The other malefactor hanging on the other side of Christ personally recognized Jesus Christ in his heart as King of Kings. This man was going to live in paradise forever. Once any man recognizes Jesus Christ and his own guilt, his heart and his life can be eternally changed by God.
Not only did one criminal identify Jesus Christ but supported His innocence in saying He was blameless of the charges leveled against Him. At the same time, this man knew that himself and the criminal on the other side were guilty as charged.
