Released And Treated Like A King
Jeremiah 52:31-34 (KJV) And it came to pass in the seven and thirtieth year of the captivity of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the twelfth month, in the five and twentieth day of the month, that Evil-merodach king of Babylon in the first year of his reign lifted up the head of Jehoiachin king of Judah, and brought him forth out of prison, And spake kindly unto him, and set his throne above the throne of the kings that were with him in Babylon, And changed his prison garments: and he did continually eat bread before him all the days of his life. And for his diet, there was a continual diet given him of the king of Babylon, every day a portion until the day of his death, all the days of his life.
These verses describe the mercy Evilmerodach, King of Babylon, offered towards Jehoiachin, King of Judah. Not only did he choose to release this King from his prison confinement, he placed him in a place of authority over the kings of Moab, Ammon, and Edom, among other leaders also defeated by the Babylonians. In short, Jehoiachin is treated like a king for the remaining years of his life rather than a scoundrel! He was offered a place at the king’s table for a prime meal portion to enrich his belly for the rest of his life.
Almost identical verses describing these kind moves by Merodach are found in Second Kings 25:27 to substantiate his gracious moves further. As you know, anytime records of ancient biblical events are located more than once in God’s Word, it also confirms the importance of events that took place.
These verses of scripture above serve to remind us of the continual presence of evil working among men in this world. It also shows the potential and propensity of kindness and grace, even from the highest levels, according to the will and way of God at work in every matter. Reading about this mercy leaves us with hope in any matter.
