Right and Left Hand Men
Mark 10:35-37 (KJB) And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come unto him, saying, Master, we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire. 36 And he said unto them, What would ye that I should do for you? 37 They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory.
James and John desired to be Jesus Christ’s right- hand and left-hand men. Positionally speaking, this would be like asking the current President of the United States if you and your brother could be sworn in as Vice President and Speaker of The House.
Certainly, this can be considered both a lofty ambition and at the same time a rather foolish question. Not only was it presumptuous of these two men to think that they could be considered for such a position and asking points to the fact that neither man understood just who Jesus Christ really is. For if they had comprehended who Jesus Christ is, they would not have asked such a silly question of Him.
Many people do the same thing today. They desire to co-govern, or “share” the throne with God instead of moving out of the way in allowing Him to direct their life. Some people continually tell God what they want Him to do for them rather than sitting quietly for hearing God speak divine directions to their heart.
Let us consider who God is and to wait patiently for His direction and calling upon our life rather than jumping in with both feet for running a spiritual race that God is not leading. God desires willing people to serve and savor Him, to stand in the gap according to His divine placement, rather than enter in according to their own way and selfish desires.
