Rules, Rites, and Religion
Mark 2:24 (KJB) And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful?
Laws, decrees, acts, and regulations…. So many rules and rites in this world.
It is easy to get caught up in details of life and forget the big picture of God at hand.
The Pharisees made a practice of intimately knowing many laws handed down by God. They took great time to study and follow them as close as they could. They lost sight of the fact that they often interpreted these laws mixed together with their own traditions and beliefs, not all their positions were heralded by God.
At best, they had a “spiritual religious mix” they tried to follow with their lives. This religious “walking the line” was done, rather than keeping their eyes and ears upon the direction and correction handed down by God through His Son Jesus Christ.
The Pharisees desired to do right rather than be right with God.
The Pharisees questioned Jesus: “Why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful?” because they took great honor and pride in not breaking the law. This incident was a striking violation of God’s law of not reaping or threshing on the Sabbath.
This religious infraction surely needed to be dealt with!
