Set Apart For Service
John 17:18-19 (KJV) As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.
A bottom feeder fish continuously cleans the bottom of the ocean, lake, aquarium, or river. His job is vital in keeping the life and health of other creatures in the same water body. A bottom feeder eats and digests things in the water, which would bring certain death to other species.
Humanity faces certain death in this world without the sanctification of God. God is willing to work in souls to remove every bit of sin and to set aside individuals for His service in this world. Here in this verse from the book of John, Jesus is explaining to the disciples about their need to be scrubbed clean with His Truth. Not only is this cleaning necessary, but once done, God will set them apart for His plan in this corrupt world. Like a feeder fish, God will remove all the debris of sin as far as East is to West, Psalm 103:1, ushering in life and eliminating certain death.
This verse points to both God’s holy nature and Jesus Christ’s impending return to His Father in the eternal realm. Though the disciples did not comprehend His entire message upon first hearing it, after Calvary and Jesus Christ’s ascension to eternity, this message indeed hits home in their souls.
