Acts 8:9-11 (KJB) But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one: 10 To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God. 11 And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries.
This man named Simon was thought to be a sorcerer. Calling him this implies that he was a man who dabbled in darkness, but as you know, any man closely associated with God is not also practicing spiritual darkness.
The word bewitched, as was recorded in these verses has no such alignment with the occult.
Simon was a man who dazzled and amazed people with the presence of the power of God at work in his life. The working of God, to those who do not personally know Him, could perhaps seem magical when peering from the outside. The power and presence of God in the heart is supernatural but could appear to be associated with evil to those who did not recognize God.
Simon’s brand of astonishing people in ancient times spoken of here is far removed from any connotation of being aligned with spiritual darkness. Instead, it has everything to do with God. Yes, God was able to give the words and actions of Simon integrity and regard, and the people desired to heed his message.
The power and presence of God at work in a person may seem far-fetched until one understands that God can accomplish the supernatural in nature, or beyond what any person can comprehend from this earth. God gives credibility to His chosen vessels.
