Simon Bewitched

Acts 8:9-11 (KJB) But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one: 10 To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God. 11 And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries.

I want to call to your attention to a word divinely recorded in the above scripture verses, bewitched

This word was updated for use in modern per-versions to sorcery.  I suppose these Bible correctors could have also chosen to use other words such as witchcraft, wizard, or enchantments for the purpose of describing this wicked leaning work of Simon.  Whatever word chosen; the original context and purpose was to point to Simon’s ability to astonish

Now was such astonishing done in ill spiritual fashion or was it done in agreement with the supernatural nature of God?  Historically speaking, bewitching is most often connected to Babylon and commanded by the god of this world,  just like witchcraft and wizards, and enchantments are to this day.

Again, please note that God gave His preference in using the word bewitched in describing this man, Simon, a man who had gained the Samaritans respect and attention through nefarious spiritual means throughout a period of time.

However, Phillip also called them to attention.  Phillip was preaching about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ (Acts 8:12) and many were spiritually astonished,  now being in agreement with God, and then were baptized.  The truth changed their lives, much different than did this bewitching man Simon who was not able to radically transform lives but only captivate them for a time.

In the end, who is any man to change what God has divinely given as an ancient record and for our study and understanding today?  Changing His inspired words to read as a man desires certainly deviates from His divine context, or ancient framework imparted to man by God.

Spot this kind of word wrangling for yourself by studying and being intimately familiar with the King James Bible.  Then turn to the same verses among numerous updated Bible per-versions which are available today.  Only then can an informed person can clearly understand just exactly what changes mankind has brought to fruition likely in an attempt to cause contention and confusion among the brethren and in the lost world all perpetrated in the name of God.  In other words, do not rely on what we have said here in this devotion, seek out obvious truths and modern spiritual word games for yourself.
