Sipping Spiritual Soup

Sipping Spiritual Soup

Hebrews 5:13-14 (KJV) For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

Think about your favorite flavor of soup.  I am a ‘soup person” or one who can eat a different bowl or variety of soup each day and not tire of this sort of flavorful and filling meal.  I also find a bowl of soup to be comfort food, especially in rare times, I do not feel well.  However, I do not remain on a liquid diet long term for my body needs more than just soup to survive and to flourish.

This verse is speaking about sipping spiritual milk.  This low-key and low-calorie spiritual meal is widely available in this world.  Consuming only a diet of spiritual milk can be compared to bottle-fed infants,  who continue to consume meals based on milk into toddlerhood, rather than moving on to more solid food.  Just as a young child must move onto solid food and meat and continue to drink milk to ingest necessary vitamins and minerals essential to proper growth and maturity, a sincere professing Christian must move on to more significant spiritual food.

A mature Christian must dig for the truth and hide it in his heart as he or she grows and in things of God through Jesus Christ.

God desires that each of His spiritual family grow in His Word, and consume truth and allow it to trickle into the confines of his heart (Psalm 119:11).  Doing this matures the person, directs him, and strengthens his or her spiritual resolve among the wickedness in this world.
