Sodden Their Own Children
Lamentations 4:9-10 (KJB) They that be slain with the sword are better than they that be slain with hunger: for these pine away, stricken through for want of the fruits of the field. 10 The hands of the pitiful women have sodden their own children: they were their meat in the destruction of the daughter of my people.
These verses present quite a look at the appalling state of the nation of Jerusalem as it collapsed in the Babylonian siege. This falling apart was so deplorable that there was considerable physical hunger among the people for the fields that once provided a bountiful supply of food were now empty and desolate.
Their hunger was severe, both physical and spiritual, and that this verse tells us that “The hands of the pitiful women have sodden their own children…” How horrible was it that these women were so hungry they resorted to eating their children. This sordid situation also speaks volumes about the desperate state of affairs as Israel fell.
God considers that every life is precious. This nation and these women were desperate n resorting to eating their children to survive in such dreadful times. Indeed, no person in modern times has faced such a physical hunger that they resort to such measures.
