Sons of Belial
Judges 19:22 (KJB) Now as they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him.
The Bible does not have anything good to say about the men of this city. The entire city was polluted with fleshly atrocities where once godliness was found.
In fact, God is quite point-blank, not mincing any words in describing them as men of Belial. This means they were identified by Him as sons of the devil. This title indeed is not complementary to their spiritual heart condition or favorable to their choice of action.
It is important to note that this verse indicates that their hearts were merry, but this does not mean they are filled with lasting joy. There is quite a difference between having merriment, brought about by having a little fun (good or evil) in circumstances, and in rightly possessing joy of the Lord.
The joy of the Lord is lasting while being merry fluctuates between that which is good and bad according to a person’s spiritual heart condition and the changing winds of this world.
These men were forceful brutes, who were willing to go any length to get what they desired in their dark and wicked hearts. They employed “mob-like mentality” instead of greeting them like godly and peaceable men. They used brute force to surround this old man’s house and began to beat on the door because he had a visitor who was a stranger to them.
What was all this hullabaloo for?
They were beating on the door because they desired to “know him.” This was not a welcome greeting. Anotherwards, they wanted to sexually know this man who had entered this old man’s house. The desires of their flesh were adversely affecting both their choices and actions.
Finding ourselves in the wrong places and making wrong choices always lead to sinful desires and the overwhelming presence of wickedness. On the other hand, Godly desires lead to godliness and obedience to God, these men were spiritual thugs forcefully petitioning a man’s house to get what they desired in their wicked leaning flesh. Undoubtedly their wickedness was not pleasing to God.
