Swept and Garnished but Not Quickened Alive
Luke 11:24-26 (KJB) When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out. 25 And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished. 26 Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first.
There are many ideas at work in this world concerning the power and presence of evil spirits. Some people do not understand the great spiritual implications or danger involved in the presence of dark spirits and therefore, do not take dealing with them as a serious situation.
In fact, some wayward individuals even desire to converse with such ominous spirits often looking for an opportunity to speak with friends or family who has already physically died.
They certainly do not understand the grave spiritual problem in harboring or communicating with the spirit realm. In fact, it has often been said if we could see the spirit realm hovering about us as we live in this world it would be a frightening experience.
There are some who desire to remove and eradicate dangerous spiritual dark forces but often move forward in doing so according to their own ideas and understanding rather than according to what God has revealed in His Word about dealing with such spiritual situations. The truth is it takes the supernatural power of God to exterminate the presence of evil. Nothing else will suffice in ridding evil spirits from a spiritually wayward soul.
What often happens when a person seeks to use his own method of removing dark spirits is that the heart and soul are swept clean outwardly, but the doors and windows heart are left open. These gaps, however small, can then serve as a veiled repository allowing the dirt and debris of evil spiritual darkness to creep back in. Before long, the same soul is even dirtier and harbors an even greater presence of evil and wicked spirits than before any attempt to clean and polish outwardly.
The spiritual cleaning described in these verses points God’s finger for revealing a “religious” man’s choice to lead a moral life, “turn over a new leaf,” or to follow “religious rules and regulations” in cleaning up his life. These verses are used to illustrate a person trying to clean up his life rather than submitting to the supernatural cleaning power, presence, and spiritual sealing power available by personally knowing and trusting in God.
If God does the spiritual cleaning, it is certain the evil spirits will not return and multiply in force, for God seals and secures each sanctified heart. He divinely cleans evil spirits from a heart-quickening it spiritually alive unto His eternal spiritual nature.
