Swift To Hear

Swift To Hear

This is the third installment in our Spiritually Fit Heart Series.  This post probes into both the physical and spiritual aspect of man’s hearing.  Man’s natural ears are shuttered, or puckered up tight, towards hearing any spiritual truths of God.  Mankind is naturally fitted with potential for the excellent natural hearing of dark messages of the god of this world.  Because man is naturally more inclined to hear the messages of the god of this world rather than truths of God, therein lies the root of his spiritual heart problem.

Physically speaking, man’s ears are able to take sound waves and turn them into language and sounds that he can easily recognize and understand.  This may seem like a small feat but his human ears are intricately fashioned to be uniquely sensitive to sounds in this world which are both static and dynamic in nature.  Sound, such as spoken language or music flows into his ear lobe, moves through the ear canal, and into a series of sensitive but delicate areas, augmenting a natural reaction to the sounds found at work in his environment.

The physical ear consists of an outer, middle, and the inner ear which all work together to receive and amplify an endless variety of sounds.  The physical mechanisms of his ear convert sound waves into a signal which travels along the nervous system to activate his hearing as it transmits important data along his vestibulocochlear nerve found deep inside his ear which travels along this neural pathway and connects with relays and switches at work in our brain to produce a physical reaction.

As you can now imagine, physical listening involves much more than various sounds entering into man’s ears.

God created creatures, such as the German Shepherd for example, with much greater hearing capability than mankind will ever have working in his own ears.  However, neither man or animal will ever hear as crisp and defined as God divinely hears.  God’s hearing is supernatural in nature and cannot ever be duplicated by man or animal.

Both humans and creatures can be born without a natural ability to hear, or can be born with a limited ability, and must adapt to their environment without the benefit of hearing any or all of what is going on about them.  Mankind’s other senses will adapt to help make up for his deficit in his physical hearing ability.  Anyone who has been given the privilege of naturally hearing well, cannot imagine what it is like to live without having his sharp and clear natural hearing.  A man inadvertently processes many sounds throughout his life perhaps without any thought to unseen labor his ears naturally accomplish without his assistance each day.

The spiritual hearing, on the other hand, requires the spiritual action of God and application made by regenerated man to hear, absorb, and apply spiritual things of God into his life.  Man does not receive things of God by osmosis.  He must actively desire and seek what God has for him to perceive (James 1:22).  Spiritual listening involves his heart, mind, and ears working together in sweet spiritual synchronization.  His spiritual comprehension does not rely upon his learned or accumulated knowledge found in this world.  There is no need for grasping a higher level of intelligence to hear what God has to say.  The message of Truth in God’s Word is active, sharp (Hebrews 4:12) timeless, ageless, and so simple that even a young child can hear it and easily understand it.

Natural hearing often gradually diminishes and degrades over time.  Workers who have spent years laboring in an arena with recurrent high decibel sounds like factory workers or farmers laboring in the middle of loud environments, or fire and police personnel who face the roar of sirens daily, or those who are members of a music group, are often at a greater risk of losing the acuteness of their hearing ability over time, but all mankind gradually suffers some natural hearing loss despite his atmosphere as he ages.

Loss of hearing is not common with spiritual hearing, which should naturally intensify, improve, and strengthen over time.  The more a man’s discernment is exercised the more sensitive and reliable his spiritual hearing becomes.  In fact, the Bible tells us that spiritual hearing can only be received from God when a person’s heart condition is unlocked and softened by the finished work of God.  God does His supernatural work in the softened heart of man and then it is then up to mankind to thrive and mature spiritually.

The Bible tells us that God’s presence dwelling inside the heart of man is fueled by faith.

Romans 10:17 (KJB)   So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

A genuine personal relationship with God always unlocks, or “flips the switch” to the “on position” inside man’s ears, working its way inwardly to eternally affect his heart and influence his mind.  It is possible for mankind to profess a relationship with God but have no personal relationship with Him, leaving his ears “spiritually shuttered” or stopped up towards truths of God.  The nature of man’s heart is always intimately known by God.  Man’s spiritual condition will bubble to the surface in his life; producing spiritual fruit or “spiritually spoiling” drawing flies from the god of this world.  The condition of his spiritual health can be discerned by mature Christians.

God’s Word promises multiplication of truths:

Mark 4:24-25 (KJB)   And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given.  25 For he that hath, to him shall be given: and he that hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he hath.

Genuine spiritual hearing always multiplies learning as the regenerate man is continually rewarded by the revealing or unveiling of greater and greater truth in his life.  The natural hearing, on the other hand, carries no promises from God for any accumulation or abounding of knowledge.  Rather what is heard with man’s natural ears is always at work to bring about loss and ruin for man, both on this earth and for loss forever in the eternal realm.

Sometimes the man who has been given a new spiritual heart by God chooses to be indifferent, to ignore, to rebel, and rebuff instruction and direction from God in troubling seasons of his life.  The regenerate man must choose to live by faith rather than by his limited sight in this world.

Job’s life is a good example of choosing to live in faith.  Job had to grasp the spiritual nature of God at work in his life when everything around him looked bleak and desperate.  He could hear God even when the world was falling apart all around him.

As his troubles began to dissuade Job could spiritually discern the presence of God at work in his life:

Job 42:5 (KJB)   I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee.

There is no limitation to the power and presence of God at work in the hearts and minds of His spiritual family.  The ear gate is the ingression point of Truth and the first entry in God’s spiritual process of regenerating of the condition of man’s heart.  Truth winds its way southward into the willing hearts and minds of man and filters outward as a pleasant and active spiritual aroma into the lives of His children.  The message of Truth works to reveal God’s spiritual light to hungry hearts.

Lastly, some people have “itching ears” and are busy seeking a preacher who will deliver palatable fables which easy and pleasant on man’s ears rather than looking for a man who is not afraid to upset the “spiritual applecart” of others as God wills by revealing hard truths and unpopular messages which are designed to plow into the heart of the problem.

The Bible says:

2 Timothy 4:3-4 (KJB)   For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;  4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

Spiritual truths from God’s Word are discovered and discerned as they travel inside the ear gate of the man and woman of God enabling man to be “swift to hear” truth even when he cannot “see” truth at work in this world.  The Truth of God is spiritually alive and active.  They expound forth and wind themselves into the heart of man fueled by the faith in the finished work of God at Calvary.  Man’s spiritual ears gather God’s message casting away false doctrine wrapping His Truth around regenerated hearts for saving and securing man now and for all eternity.
