Take Up Your Cross August 30th 2015

Does your heart rest in presents or presence of God?

Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee. Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart. If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacles. (Job 22:21-23 KJV)

Job is listening to guidance given by his friend Eliphaz.  His advice is remarkably like the prosperity gospel many preach today.  Eliphaz, in effect, is telling Job to get to know God on a personal level and God will surely give him abounding riches, including peace and prosperity.

Yes, knowing God on a personal level does bring about many rich blessings, however, blessings from God do not always equate to multiplication in a financial means.  Blessings from the hand of God can prosper a man financially, but not always.  Some of the poorest people on this earth are the most blessed of God because His blessings are always an increase in a spiritual manner but not necessarily in a financial or material aspect.  God’s spiritual economy does not revolve around blessings according to the world’s Wall Street economy.

God’s great peace and riches come through an intimate and eternal relationship with Him allowing His Word to be written or engraved upon your heart.  Eliphaz either had a shallow and distant relationship with God or was basing his entire understanding of God upon pretenses of the god of this world and missing the big picture of the God of heaven entirely.

Job remained steadfast in his own solid relationship with God through having a wife who was not understanding, receiving fickle advice from his friends, and after facing a multitude of persecution and trials in this spiritual dry and desperate season of his life.
