His Word can eternally quench spiritual thirst.
Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. (John 4:13-14 KJV)
You certainly understand thirst. Just eating a huge deli sandwich loaded with salami, ham, pepperoni, and other salty meats can cause a person to be excessively thirsty and parched. This is a physical thirst that cannot be quenched through routine attempts of drinking in the normal daily amount of liquids; this physical thirst requires more fluid volume.
The same scenario happens with our spiritual soul. Mankind tries to alleviate or satisfy their spiritual thirst through inadequate means. All individuals are naturally born with a thirst for things spiritual in nature which can only be quenched with one fluid source. It is a fluid which is intravenously introduced via a spiritual encounter with God through faith who plants the Holy Spirit inside those who willingly accept His free gift of salvation through faith.
This woman Jesus was having a conversation with had spent a lifetime trying to satisfy her own spiritual thirst that raged from inside of her. She tried various worldly potions including human relationships using men to satisfy her physical desires. These many encounters did nothing to alleviate her monstrous thirst from within her soul; but did serve to bury her deeper into the confines of sin strangling her within many unrewarding human relationships.
Jesus intimately knew her spiritual condition. He knew every encounter she experienced. He knew her darkened heart condition and her great need for living water to refresh and alleviate her spiritual thirst. In this ancient biblical encounter as Jesus chose to go out of His way, deviating from the normal route, to have this conversation with her at the well giving way for an opportunity for Jesus to speak His words of life to this woman. She gave Him her undivided spiritual attention placing faith upon hearing His powerful words.
So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. (Romans 10:17 KJV)
Today the message of salvation and the outpouring of this living water to parched souls come as well to those who hear His Word and allow it to trickle down into their heart and coating their minds with this timeless message of love, hope, and unlimited mercy.
Do you go out of your way, according to the leading of God, quoting scripture to those who are spiritually thirsting bringing about spiritual refreshment for parched souls? The power of life is in His Word for all eternity.
