God retains all rights as the owner of our body, soul, and spirit in this life and for eternity.
Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die. (Ezekiel 18:4 KJV)
All souls belong to God. All mankind was created as a trichotomy having a body, soul, and spirit.
This verse in context is speaking about rebellious Jews in ancient biblical times in the Old Testament; however, it can be applied to mankind today as well.
God is the creator and owner of all souls since the beginning of time until the end of time. It does not matter if man chooses to live according to God’s purposes and will for his life; or to live in enmity to the things of God.
The very last sentence in this verse: “the soul that sinneth, it shall die…” is important to understand. God cannot have anything to do with the nature of sin. Sin brings about the wages of death and a final destination of Hell for all eternity for those who choose to dwell on this earth in a life of sin.
God highlighted both His divine ownership of all souls and an eternal consequence to how we live upon this earth. Man can choose to live in faith according to the will of God residing for all eternity with God. Or live in enmity to the things of God sentencing their soul to burn in Hell for all eternity.
