Temperance Tames the Soul

Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof. (Romans 13:13-14 KJV)

Supernatural soberness, solemness, somberness, seriousness, moderation, balance, maturity, due diligence, and holy restraint are found liberally burgeoning in the hearts of obedient children of God.  Men and women of God who desire to walk authentically, both before God and mankind, while sojourning in this world.

Others who make the choice to be involved in a two sided, or double minded spiritual journey are walking in step with the wickedness of the god of this world laced with unrestrained evil and spiritual darkness rather than participating in this heavenly marathon race tempered by the holiness and righteous character of God.

I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway. (1 Corinthians 9:26-27 KJV)

Spiritual fitness and discipline are a requirement for running in God’s marathon.  These qualifications and suitability are necessary, according to God’s measuring curve, for a foot soldier to serve faithfully and fruitfully in “God’s Heavenly Army.”  Serving Him is running forward in a specific spiritual direction, rather than running about carefree, random, and without restraint, holding hands with the god of this world and his.  aimless and crooked race never comes to completion.  On the other hand, the heavenly race forging ahead in fellowship with God, comes to its peak with spiritual completeness, fullness and spiritual wholeness as mankind is ushered across the heavenly finish line in the eternal realm.  The end of God’s “spiritual marathon” ushers in perfect fellowship with God, complete with crowns to cast before Him, existing spiritually alive for all eternity.

And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee. (Acts 24:25 KJV)

The fruit of God does not blossom or come to fruition according to man’s own righteousness.  Neither does righteousness appear on man’s own terms and timing, or have any roots established in the darkness of the god of this world.  Felix is a biblical example of a man who reasoned according to his own terms and conditions determined to align up next to the god of this world rather than the righteousness of God. The spiritual nature and holy ways of God cannot be constrained or duplicated through any works, reasoning, or understanding of man.  Man can only find an “even keel” to life through having the presence of The Holy Spirit of God at work in his heart.

Felix applied his own vain opinion and understanding to the supernatural power and presence of God that the Apostle Paul presented to both he and Drusilla.  Using their own human power, neither was able to comprehend anything Paul taught of a spiritual nature, nor grasp the urgency and importance of coming to proper spiritual terms with God.  Therefore, they were both more than willing to shove God off to the side until a more convenient time was found for delving deeper in the truths of God, as the present time had too many important distractions from this world to care anything about truths of God.

Even while having a tremble (rather than having eternal temperance and peace) in giving his answer, Felix was more than willing to set the Truth of God aside for a better, but undetermined time, of the future.  Apparently the Spirit of God had been provoking and prodding both of them into considering the shallow depth of their lives and drawing them into recognizing their need of God, and the reality of Heaven.  Both Felix and Drusilla chose to flatly ignore the calling of God upon their lives, choosing to live in darkness with a persistent fear of an unknown future lying ahead of them.  The future is known for those who have a personal eternal relationship with God.  The child of God does have lasting peace and temperance, and a host of other spiritual fruits at work in their lives because of assurance that God holds their eternal future securely in His nail scarred hands.

What about you?  Are your spiritual ears open unto the things of God, or are you willing to gamble your future away by ignoring the cost of sin and the sureness of an eternal Hell for all sinners ?  Are you quaking in your shoes like Felix, or at rest in the calming presence of the power of God working in your life, both now and for all eternity?

For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; (Titus 2:11-12 KJV)

Spiritual wisdom, knowledge, and salvation is not hard to come by in this present Age of Grace.  The fact is it is readily available to anyone desiring to understand it.  However, it will not be available forever.  Sadly, not many currently choose to accept it and put it to work in their own lives.  Those personally knowing about God and applying His truths in their lives is rare.  Many choose to disregard and suppress any knowledge of God by living far removed from what His will is for their lives, easily falling for many wicked and evil schemes of the god of this world, and opening themselves up for a continual platter of darkness, trembling, and destruction, both now and forever in the eternal realm.

Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. (Galatians 5:23 KJV)

There is no decision greater or more powerful than determining to invite the Spirit of God take up residence in your soul.  This spiritual relationship produces many jewels and embellishments while taming the soul, bringing about a lasting eternal luster and shine upon man’s outer shell, illuminated from the character of God at work within his softened heart.  The host of spiritual fruit available from God’s presence is released upon personal salvation in man’s heart without any limitations placed upon them.  The quickened man has the supernatural power of God living within him, but often chooses to limit the energy and power of God at work in his life, applying the brakes, rather than permitting God to punch the gas pedal, directing and steering man’s life according to God’s will and way.

Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. (1 Corinthians 9:24-25 KJV)

The reason for running the spiritual race with godly character towards the eternal realm, in a nutshell, is not for anything personal for mankind to gain. The spiritual motive and godly temperament in accelerating forward in this heavenly race is to receive spiritual crowns with the sole purpose of bringing glory and honor to God.  Man will cast crowns they are rewarded humbly at the throne of God in the heavenly realm.

The ultimate prize in participating in God’s eternal race is to receive an incorruptible crown which can never be taken away, while the prize for participating in the race of the god of this world is for a corruptible crown.  One crown lasts forever while the other one melts down in the final test of fire at the finish line of life.

Allow God’s righteous fruit and immutable holy character to transform your heart and life becoming spiritually tame and mature in the faith both now and for all eternity.
