Temporal and Eternal
2 Corinthians 4:18 (KJB) While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
Things of this world are temporary in nature while things of God will last forever. Each lie at opposite ends of the spectrum. Undoubtedly, knowing this you can understand a person must choose his direction in life, either gravitating towards the here and now or in choosing to follow eternal things of God.
The problem is that man is often caught up in what he can see rather than placing faith in that which he cannot see and perceive as being real. The things on this earth are tangible and touchable, while heavenly things are solely a figment of God, at work in thoughts of every renewed mind, and guaranteed by the promises of God.
It is only natural for a lost man to look around at what he has and his circumstances. While it is supernatural, or above the ordinary for a regenerated man to hear God and look to view this earth through the lens God provides of Heaven. It is a spiritual act to place faith in the supernatural works of God and a work of the flesh to lean upon the power and presence of the god of this world.
Things of this world are temporary in nature and things of eternity are perpetual, lasting forever. God provides eternal benefits and blessings while the god of this world coaxes mankind with passing material things in the here and now.
