The Battle Of Our Flesh
Romans 7:18 (KJV) For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
Paul holds back no truth in telling us that our flesh is bad. This is true in ancient times and today. If we allow our flesh to lead us in this life, we will give in to every whim and desire appealing to our overloaded senses, like alcohol, drugs, and fornication, for example. Any person led by his senses and emotions will undoubtedly find himself making poor choices on the fast track to hell.
Regenerated hearts are filled with the goodness of God. This kind of life permits God to direct us in our choices and to tamp improper desires so that we can remain in agreement with God rather than stand in opposition to Him. This is a life that brings honor and glory to God rather than feeding selfish desires.
These spiritual battles are ongoing while we are alive on this earth. Our flesh desires to trip us up and lead us astray, while God desires to spiritually mature us and to lead us closer in agreement with Him. This unrelenting struggle is real, a skirmish over giving into recognition of our feelings and emotions or applying proven truths presented to us by God.
But, God, He is in control of surrendered hearts, and knowing this is excellent news for sincere professing Christians. Each of us can rest in the power and presence of God, and with Him, make choices that honor and glorify Him.
