The Evil Spirit Answered Sceva
Acts 19:13-16 (KJB) Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. 14 And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so. 15 And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye? 16 And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
If you think that exorcising evil spirits are a trivial pursuit then you might want to consider what happened to Sceva, a Jewish priest attempting to rid a soul of evil spirits. The reality is that exorcising demons, then or today, is certainly nothing to take lightly.
Though these Jewish men were frightened by the actions of a dark spirit, eventually God’s name was magnified. You see, God can use any situation, good or evil, in bringing about His will all for His glory and honor. Undoubtedly this circumstance was recorded for our consideration and learning concerning the danger and certain demise of evil spirits.
There are without question numerous evil spirits at work in this world operating in the hearts of lost souls. These demons are dark, dangerous, and deadly. Demon spirits can be exorcised, or removed from any individual, however, doing so takes the power and presence of God at work in the situation.
An evil spirit has control over the thoughts and actions of a lost heart. The god of this world uses demons for his dark work. Any demon can be removed from a person through the name of Jesus Christ, but left to prevail, will cause certain chaos, destruction, and demise.
