The Human Condition
Romans 3:13 (KJB) Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips.
The context of this particular verse, located in the middle of a list of characteristics naturally at work in lost hearts, notably whether they are of a Gentile of Jewish descent. In other words, these characteristics truthfully describe the spiritual state of any lost soul.
The stench of death is one that no person can shrug off or easily forget. Just ask medical professionals and criminal investigators who often apply a layer of vapor rub beneath their nostrils to counter the offensive smell of a putrifying corpse in the course of performing essential duties of their profession.
I never knew until I had a recent conversation with an individual in the know that there is a flowering plant that naturally emits the putrid smell of death. If you search this out, you will find that, yes, such a plant exists and found growing naturally in Africa.
So, then, coming back to zero in on this portion of scripture from the verse above verse, “Their throat is an open sepulchre…” is undoubtedly painting a picture for us speaking about rancid and ungodly speech naturally emitting from lost hearts. This sentence does not, in any way, illustrate a pretty picture of a natural choice of words.
Indeed, you get the idea quite quickly how this verse is tasked to portray the offensive language often used by lost spiritual hearts. Throughout God’s Word, you will find that Jesus Christ used simple language and easy examples to place His timeless message on the bottom shelf for clear understanding in ancient times and today.
