The Lasting Cost Of Rejecting Christ
Revelation 21:8 (KJB) But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
This scripture verse lists several descriptive words concerning potential states of the heart. Though these particular words may seem to describe people who are spiritually worse off than you, the reality is that these words can be used to convey the state of heart of some ordinary-seeming and moral leaning people.
Whoa, what do I mean in making this last statement?
Well, take the words fearful or unbelief as an example. Any person can appear outwardly as a sincere professing Christian; however, if anxiety and skepticism are at work in their heart, then perhaps they have never agreed with God about the nature of sin or allow Him to will and work a new spiritual state in their heart. A sincere hearted person accepts Christ and embraces His holy viewpoint and state of mind concerning all things as he or she progresses and matures in their new spiritual life.
Accepting Christ rather than rejecting Him includes fearing God and not worrying about things of this world. It means having faith in God and not placing trust in other people or material things of this earth. Recognizing Christ and minimizing humanity will replace abominable characteristics and hate common in following the god of this world with the grace and love only available inside a personal relationship with God. Any individual who knows God will reject murder (in all forms, including physical acts and spiritual acts), and regenerated hearts will avoid immorality, witchcraft, and deception.
Souls who reject Christ pay a high toll both in this world, face certain death, and miss fellowship with God in eternity. Choosing to deny Christ and to align with the wickedness of this world allows the above ungodly character traits and actions to permeate hearts and minds allowing sin to flourish. However, in regenerated hearts, God’s lasting power and presence wills and works His goodness and grace, and to flow outward towards others in abundance.
