The Liberal Soul
Proverbs 11:24-25 (KJV) There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty. The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.
Perhaps, for many of you, when you read this verse, the wording “the liberal soul…” confuses. It seems to indicate, using the modern language of today, a left-leaning individual as opposed to a conservative person. However, this verse does not point to anything about one’s beliefs, standing, or political sway in this world.
It does, however, indicate those who are liberal-minded with their giving; God will provide them with great blessings. It points to generous giving of oneself to God in all things.
The intention of this teaching points to mislead hearts who are stuck on the demand for giving ten percent mantra. Or to those who feel it is not necessary to give to God little or none at all simply because He does not need our money. To properly understand this scripture, we must realize that God owns everything. This statement means He owns us, this land, and every one of our material goods and our financial means. His ownership must align these verses not only with our financial state of health but, more importantly, align Him in our spiritually maturing state of heart and all our affairs.
A sincere child of God must place his or her focus on the liberal giving of all things, including time, talents, and resources, to comprehend the liberal giving of God to us without merit. Rather than understand a one-sided God with abundant financial resources without regard to the state of our living. The latter definition is undoubtedly popular with a false prosperity gospel but does not line up with the teaching found inside God’s Word.
We are taught to give God the first of everything, in doing so, God promises to bless our soul, our works, and touch every aspect of our life with His provisions. Liberal giving increases the breadth of the soul but not necessarily to bring us a bounty of earthly abundance as we sojourn in this world.
