The Only Potentate
1 Timothy 6:15-16 (KJB) Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; 16 Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.
Potentate is a big word. A “quarter word” for sure, but what does it really mean because it is not a common word, and many are not familiar with its modern use in the English language.
According to the definition, found using Webster’s 1812 dictionary, in short, it means a person with great power and sway, which is above that of earthly rulers and beyond that of celestial hierarchy. Anotherwards, it points to the highest of the highest rulers or authority in this world and in the world to come.
The Apostle Paul, who was inspired to record this scripture, knew Jesus was certainly who he said He is, for Paul understood the absolute authority bestowed upon Jesus Christ then, now, and for all time.
The ruling nature of Jesus Christ is superior to any other. Not only that but His power is to be honored and will last forever.
